Dodgers’ Dave Roberts issues challenge to Freddie Freeman after star’s 2,500th hit
Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Freddie Freeman achieved another impressive feat on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates as he recorded his 2,500th hit, making him the only active player to reach the mark.
Freeman’s latest achievement highlighted the victory of the Dodgers, 12-3, at PNC Park. They improved to 43-24, further solidifying their grip on the top spot in the NL West.
The 38-year-old first baseman tallied his 2,500th hit with an RBI single against Pirates rookie Brandan Bidois in the seventh inning. It capped off the Dodgers’ 10-0 run.
After the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he was happy for Freeman, who has always been the consummate professional. Roberts told reporters that he challenged the three-time Silver Slugger to hit 500 more.
“It’s a tall order, but I’m not gonna bet against him,” said Roberts in the video posted by Bleed Los.
“We go through the grind every day, so you have to celebrate certain moments, and it was a big moment for him. It speaks to the longevity and the consistency of Freddie. It deserved a time and a moment for him.”
Only 33 players in league history have reached 3,000 hits.
Freeman did not hide his elation over his personal milestone, stressing that he does not take anything for granted in his 17-year career.
“As you get older, you come to appreciate moments like this. I think when you’re going over the course of a 162-game season, you don’t really have much time to reflect on milestones or records. Something like 2,500 hits is really special, and it means a lot to me,” said Freeman in a report from MLB.com’s Max Ralph.
The Dodgers will again battle the Pirates on Wednesday.
