Dodgers’ Dave Roberts gives in-game review of Roki Sasaki’s stuff vs. Cardinals

The Los Angeles Dodgers watched a rocky beginning for Roki Sasaki during his highly-anticipated 2025 debut. Manager Dave Roberts started seing a different Sasaki in the past week, though. Did that version of Sasaki carry over into Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals?

Roberts emerged impressed by what he saw.

“I liked his stuff today,” Roberts told MLB on Fox. “If he’s able to throw that low dart and keep doing that with a split, I think he’s really got something.”

He added how he’d hope to see more velocity on his pitches.

Sasaki earned the start on the hill for the Dodgers in this road contest. He stood on the mound for four innings and posted these numbers: four strikeouts, three runs allowed and five hits surrendered. Except one became this home run by Jordan Walker:

Walker smacked Sasaki’s 84 miles per hour slider while facing an 0-2 count against the right-hander. Alec Burleson drove home too after the two-run blast by Walker.

Sasaki started out fast to begin. He fanned Nolan Gorman with a strike-swinging 96 mph fastball. He forced a ground out against Ivan Herrera and a fly out versus JJ Wetherholt to close out the first inning.

Wetherholt became the second batter Sasaki struck out during the second. The now second-year pro forced a foul out and ground out to close out that inning.

Sasaki managed to shake off the third inning homer in the fourth by allowing no hits and leaving no one on base. Herrera struck out swinging while Wetherholt and Victor Scott II flied out.
