Diamondbacks’ Ildemaro Vargas makes franchise history with 27-game hitting streak
Before the season started, if you were told that the league’s hottest hitter would come from the Arizona Diamondbacks, you would have immediatly though it would be Ketel Marte or Corbin Carroll. The hottest hitter in baseball right now is Ildemaro Vargas, who leads the league in hitting entering Friday.
The Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs are currently in the middle of a series opener at Wrigley Field. The 34-year-old infielder is 4-4 with one RBI as the D-Backs trail the Cubs 6-5 in the 6th inning (at time of writing). Vargas is now hitting over .400 with a .404 batting average. He entered this contest 3rd in the league in OPS at 1.087, which is now much higher after Friday. The switch-hitter has six home runs and 21 RBIs on the season.
Not that his other three hits weren’t as important, but his first hit of the contest in the first inning saw him make franchise history. Vargas now has hit safely in 24 straight games this season and 27 dating back to the end of last season.

“Arizona Diamondbacks IF Ildemargo Vargas stretches his hitting streak to 27 consecutive games dating back to last year, and 24 this season. It’s the longest hitting streak to begin a season in franchise history, and the 2nd-longest overall in D-backs history.”
Vargas cannot stop hitting, and the Diamondbacks are seeing a lot of success because of it. Arizona is 16-14 so far on the season, which has them third in the NL West division. If Vargas continues to hit like this, he could become an All-Star, which is rare for a player that age to earn his first honor. Arizona is relying on him to keep his hitting up.
