Devils push back on viral trophy post after Knicks’ NBA title run
The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years and the first “Big 4” title in New York since 2011. The New Jersey Devils have three Stanley Cup championships to their name and were included in a viral “New York Championships” graphic. New Jersey’s social media team fought back, saying their Stanley Cup wins belong to the Garden State.
“Not New York. Never needed to be. Do better,” the social media team posted.

An X community note was added to the original post, “The New Jersey Devils are not a New York team.”
The graphic included the four Stanley Cups from both the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders, along with the Devils’ three. They won those titles in 1995, 2000, and 2003, all on the backs of incredible defense and goaltending. Martin Brodeur put up one of the best careers of any goalie in NHL history and is in the Hall of Fame.
The debate on which teams are considered “New York teams” may never end. The Devils don’t want to be in, so they’ll get cut out. But the New York Giants and Jets both count, and they also play in New Jersey. Both teams have roots in NYC but have played in Jersey for decades.
Then, you get into the Buffalo of it all. On the bottom of the graphic, the Buffalo Bills and Sabres are covered in red, indicating they have never won a championship. Once one of those Western New York teams actually wins, the conversation can start. But the 374 miles between Madison Square Garden and Key Bank Center will be a key piece of that debate.
The Devils did not make the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year, finishing with 87 points. Jack Hughes became an American hero in the Olympics, but his NHL club did not make the dance.
