Darts hero to meet president after historic world championship performance

Kenyan darts sensation David Munyua is set to meet the country’s president after his PDC World Darts Championship heroics.

The fan favourite made history at Alexandra Palace in December by reaching the second round.

Munyua became the first Kenyan player ever to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship by knocking out Mike De Decker.

He produced one of the tournament’s biggest ever shocks as he dumped out the 18th seed with a 3-2 victory.

Although Munyua was ultimately beaten by Kevin Doets in his next match, his achievements did not go unrecognised.

The 30-year-old later received a congratulatory message from the Kenyan president William Ruto.

Presidential meeting

Munyua has now revealed a meeting between the pair is being arranged.

He told Oche 180: “There is a lot going on. It has been a short time and we are still looking forward to meeting him.

“He was very interested in that because it has never happened before. I was the first Kenyan to participate in the PDC World Championship.

“I think right now I am in a position to speak well about darts and how we can improve it in our country.

“That’s why I am still working on it, and we are progressing quite well. Things will be very different soon as far as that is concerned.”

Munyua became an instant crowd favourite at Ally Pally by beating De Decker.

He now hopes his victory and darts in general can help bring people together in Africa.

Discussing the potential impact, he added: “That will be a rather huge appeal as far as unity is concerned, especially in Africa.

“In Kenya, we have almost 50 different tribes and sport is the only activity that brings this culture together.

“We can have one particular aim: to play and interact, share ideas and move forward peacefully.”

The PDC have already announced a change to the number of African qualifiers at this year’s PDC World Darts Championship.

Following Munyua’s win, two spots will now be available for players from the continent.

A Northern and Southern African qualifying event will be held to determine the entrants.

Munyua had earned his spot in the draw in September 2025 by winning the African Darts Group qualifier.

In doing so, he also became the first Kenyan to qualify for the tournament.
