Cubs’ Matthew Boyd out indefinitely with meniscus injury

Matthew Boyd became the 10th player on the Chicago Cubs to go on the IL on Wednesday after suffering a meniscus injury on his day off. From the sounds of it, Boyd’s situation is a worst-case scenario, as his timeline for recovery is completely unknown.

Reports indicate that the 35-year-old left-hander will undergo surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. Manager Craig Counsell claimed that Boyd’s time away from the Cubs is indefinite.

“Cubs P Matthew Boyd to have surgery after a left meniscus injury, per Craig Counsell,” reported Rogers. “Timetable unknown right now.”

How the injury happened is not anything of the norm. It’s said that Boyd sustained the injury while attempting to sit down to play with his children, per Rogers. Chicago will likely wait until after the surgery to share an exact timeline for the 12-year veteran.

“[Matthew Boyd’s] injury happened sitting down to play with his kids,” claimed Rogers.

Perhaps time away from baseball will give Boyd the break he needs to bounce back (eventually) in a big way. It’s been a rough go for him in the 2026 campaign, as Boyd owns a 6.00 ERA and 1.292 WHIP with 31 strikeouts through 24.0 innings pitched. It has to be frustrating for the 2025 All-Star, as he just came off the IL due to a bicep injury, and is now out for who knows how long with a meniscus issue.

Colin Rea takes the mound on Wednesday for the Cubs’ matchup against the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago also still has Shota Imanaga, Edward Cabrera, and Jameson Tailon leading the way in the rotation. But the franchise will have to find a replacement for Boyd, especially with Cade Horton and Justin Steele both on the IL, too.
