Craziest relegation battle ever sees nine teams at risk of drop with two games to go

LaLiga is gearing up for a monumental end to the season with nine clubs at risk of relegation to the second tier.

Spain’s top flight has two rounds of action still to play starting with this weekend’s nerve-jangling week 37 fixtures.

There are just six points separating eighth-placed Real Sociedad and Levante who sit in 19th, however La Real have accumulated enough points to be assured of top-flight survival.

Basque rivals Athletic Club and Crystal Palace’s opponents in the UEFA Conference League final, Rayo Vallecano, are also out of the relegation picture as they sit ninth and tenth in the table respectively.

While both clubs hold only a five-point lead above the drop zone, neither club can drop into the final two relegation positions due to strugglers Levante and Mallorca facing off against each other on Sunday and Elche’s match against Girona on the final day of the season.

That leaves every team in the bottom half of the table at risk of joining bottom club Real Oviedo in the second tier next season.

And there’s some notable names amongst the chaos.

Big clubs in serious jeopardy

Seven-time Europa League winners Sevilla have been locked in the relegation battle for much of the season but have crucially dug out three wins from their last three games.

Their come-from-behind victory over Espanyol last week saw them jump from the depths of the bottom three to 12th place, showcasing the fine margins between the clubs in danger.

Valencia are another big name in a precarious position despite sitting 11th in the table.

Carlos Corberan’s side have found themselves at risk of the drop in recent seasons but have found a way out of the mire and will need to do the same this season despite finishing the season at home to newly-crowned champions Barcelona.

According to Opta, Sevilla and Valencia have the best chance of survival with just a 0.13 and 0.44 per cent chance of finishing in 18th place.

Valencia, meanwhile, are just 0.04 per cent likely to finish up in 19th place.

Next up Osasuna and Espanyol hold a 1.4 and 3.3 per cent risk of relegation respectively according to Opta’s data.

After that, the figures make for more damning reading with the percentage increasing sharply.

Girona, who occupy 15th, have a 31.8 per cent chance of slipping out of the top flight

Elsewhere, Alaves hold an 18.9 per cent chance of going down while 17th-placed Elche and Mallorca and Levante who sit 18th and 19th respectively, appear to be the teams most in danger.

Opta have Mallorca at 45.3 and Levante at 47.6 per cent likely to be relegated.

The two teams will face each other in a crunch clash on Sunday, with Mallorca ending the season against Real Oviedo.
