Cowboys rumors: Why Brandon Aubrey is ‘destined’ to stay in 2026

One of the biggest questions remaining for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason regards the contract situation of kicker Brandon Aubrey, who has yet to sign a new deal to return to the team. The Cowboys and their fans have watched many a contract saga draw out longer than expected, and are hoping that a deal gets done sooner rather than later.

On Thursday morning, the team got a positive update on that front.

“Cowboys restricted free agent kicker Brandon Aubrey has until Friday to sign an offer sheet with another team; if he doesn’t, Dallas retains his rights for the 2026 season. With time running out and no offer forthcoming, Aubrey now looks destined to remain with Dallas in 2026,” reported ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on X, fomerly Twitter.

It’s certainly good news for the Cowboys, who have enjoyed watching Aubrey turn into one of the most valuable weapons in the league on offense, essentially putting the team in field goal range anytime they cross the 50 yard line.

Over the last few years, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has unnecessarily prolonged contract talks with star players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons. Last year, that ended in a disaster when Parsons requested a trade, which the Cowboys ultimately fulfilled by sending him to the Green Bay Packers shortly before the 2025 season began.

However, thankfully, it appears that the Cowboys don’t have to worry about something similar occurring with Aubrey amid his own contract situation.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are also starting to turn their attention to the upcoming NFL Draft, which is slated to get underway on April 23 from Pittsburgh.
