College Sports Commission wins arbitration case against 18 Nebraska football players
Nebraska football are finding out that the toughest opponent this year might not be on the schedule, but in a courtroom in Washington D.C.
On Monday, a neutral arbitrator handed a massive win to the College Sports Commission (CSC) in its battle against 18 University of Nebraska football players. The ruling officially blocked a series of third-party Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals worth a staggering $1 million per player.
The drama started when the CSC rejected the agreements, which were set up through Playfly Sports, the school’s multimedia rights partner. The commission labeled Playfly an “associated entity” and argued the deals lacked a “valid business purpose.” Essentially, the CSC accused the parties of “warehousing”, paying for rights to use later rather than for actual, immediate work.
CSC CEO Bryan Seeley was quick to take a victory lap, noting the system is “working as intended.” Nebraska Athletics Director Troy Dannen played it cool, stating he was proud of how his student-athletes handled the process.
The timing is brutal for a roster that just looked electric in the March 28 Red-White Spring Game. True freshman Jamal Rule stole the show in that 22-17 contest, exploding for 119 rushing yards and a touchdown on just nine carries. Transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea also flashed, tossing two touchdowns and finishing 12-of-19 for 80 yards. With that kind of talent on the field, it’s no wonder the NIL valuations are hitting seven figures.
However, this saga isn’t over. While the arbitrator’s decision is binding, the Nebraska state attorney general could be the ultimate wildcard. Nebraska law prohibits associations from penalizing athletes for NIL participation, setting the stage for a potential “state vs. commission” showdown.
For now, the 18 Huskers have to head back to the drawing board to submit revised deals that actually play by the CSC’s rules. Stay tuned, the legal highlights might be just as wild as the ones Jamal Rule is putting on tape.
