Chris Eubank Jr strongly urged to retire as potential comeback plan surfaces

Simon Jordan has joined calls for Chris Eubank Jr to retire from boxing now, instead of pursuing a return at 168lbs.

Eubank Jr has been out of action since Conor Benn claimed a convincing unanimous decision victory over him last November.

In the aftermath of his defeat, he revealed that he had been suffering from an ongoing health issue.

The 36-year-old posted a video of himself undergoing medical treatment last month, stating in the caption that he is hoping to return to the ring ‘one day’.

But the latest update from his manager, Ben Shalom, has suggested that Eubank Jr is set for a comeback up at super-middleweight as early as this summer.

Several members of the boxing fraternity have called for the Brighton boxer to call it a day with a record of 35-4.

Jordan has since echoed their sentiments as he told talkSPORT: “I mean, the fact of the matter is, he’s got a particular condition that’s resolvable. It will be resolved.

“It’s what’s left of him as a fighter. And at super middleweight, you’ve got Terence Crawford now vacated, you’ve got Canelo as a declining force.

“But I think if he takes a meaningful fight in that division, like against someone like Hamzah Sheeraz, he loses all day.

“So, whilst we enjoy Chris Eubank Jr because he is a spectacle, he’s press conference gold.

“As a fighter, I think that’s all done.”

What did Ben Shalom say Chris Eubank Jr’s comeback plan is?

Shalom previously clarified that Eubank Jr was set to make a full recovery from the undisclosed health issue for which he was receiving treatment.

During a conversation with Boxing Scene this week, Shalom revealed: “I actually am going to see him this week.

“He’s had a lot of stuff to do medically to really try and flush and get rid of what he’s been dealing with.

“So once that’s done, he will be back, probably at 168lbs.

“But there was an underlying issue that he had to get rid of, and I think we all knew that, but hopefully looking forward to him being back in the middle of the year.”

While it is good news that Eubank Jr is set to make a full recovery, the consensus seems to be that his future in the sport is uncertain.

When asked about his thoughts on the plans laid out by Shalom, talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver seemed to agree.

He said: “When I heard that, I thought that there was a speculation that he’d be returning in the summer.

“I’ve actually spoken to his team since then to see if there was any truth in that, and they said, no truth in that at the moment.

“Chris is still recovering, still getting better. He’s not 100 per cent right yet, and until he does get better, then he’ll make that decision, but it won’t be as early as the summer for sure.

“If he does return, and that is a big if.”
