Chiney Ogwumike reveals Mitchell Robinson’s ‘one job’ for Knicks vs. Cavs in ECF

The Eastern Conference Finals is set to begin on Tuesday night, with the New York Knicks hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 at Madison Square Garden at 8:00 PM E.T. This is a rematch of the first-round series between the two teams back in 2023, which the Knicks won rather handily, 4-1.

Since then, however, both teams have made huge changes. The Knicks have acquired OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Karl-Anthony Towns, just to name a few difference-makers, in the three years that have passed, while the Cavs now have James Harden to supplement their core trio of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen instead of Darius Garland.

But a huge X-factor who remains for the Knicks is Mitchell Robinson; Robinson was instrumental in bludgeoning the Cavs in the paint during the 2023 NBA playoffs, and he once again looms large as a potential difference-maker against Cleveland’s Allen-Mobley frontline.

“Mitchell Robinson, he got one job,” Chiney Ogwumike said on ESPN’s NBA Today show on Monday. “To go out there and be a beast on the boards.”

Robinson demolished the Cavs in the Knicks’ 106-95 victory in the closeout Game 5 back in 2023, recording 18 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks in 36 minutes of play. He remains a nuisance on the boards; this season alone, he hauled in 29 total rebounds in just 36 minutes of play in two meetings against Cleveland, with 16 of those boards coming on the offensive glass.

Allen has stepped up of late, giving way to the birth of the “Game 7 Jarrett Allen” moniker, but he did admit three years ago that the lights got too bright for him. Perhaps the Knicks still have that mental advantage over the Cavs center.

Whatever the case may be, the battle in the paint is going to go a long way towards determining which side gets the edge in the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals.
