Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes catches Lionel Messi at the World Cup
The GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, is packed Tuesday night, but it’s not because Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are on the field. After all, it’s still the NFL offseason.
The evening’s main attraction in Kansas City is none other than the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage match between Argentina and Algeria. To be more specific, all eyes are simply on football superstar Lionel Messi, who is donning his country’s colors again in the biggest stage of the sport.
Mahomes, along with wife Brittany Mahomes, is even in the building to watch Messi.

It is also safe to say that Mahomes and everyone in the stadium were treated to a magnificent performance from the former FIFA World Player of the Year award winner. Messi scored not one, not two, but three goals to lead the reigning World Cup champions past Algeria to the tune of a 3-0 score.
At 38 years old, Messi recorded his first-ever hat trick in a World Cup match.
Mahomes was among those in the stadium to watch Messi score in the 17th, 60th, and 76th minutes of the match.
The Chiefs quarterback is no stranger to spectacular performances, having done plenty of that in his NFL career, but he must still be awed by the greatness of the Inter Miami star.
Mahomes can see more of Messi next Monday, when Argentina take on Austria, though that match will be at the home of the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
