Chiefs HC Andy Reid addresses Rashee Rice injury and NFL status
The Kansas City Chiefs received an update Thursday as head coach Andy Reid addressed Rashee Rice’s current situation with the team and the NFL.
Rice remains away from the team while serving a 30-day sentence in Dallas County Jail after testing positive for THC, violating the terms of his probation connected to the 2024 Dallas crash. The sentence ends June 16.
The speedy wide receiver, entering his fourth NFL season, recently underwent a minor right knee cleanup to address inflammation and loose debris. The procedure revealed no structural damage, and Reid said Rice should be ready when training camp opens later this summer.
In an article published Thursday, ESPN’s Nate Taylor shared the head coach’s recent comments on the current situation.
“We’re aware of the situation, and we’ve talked to the league,” Reid said. “There’s been no talk about anything further [as far as possible punishment from the NFL]. We’re moving forward. When he gets back, we’ve got to get him caught up and doing what he needs to do.”
The 26-year-old wideout previously served a six-game suspension in 2025 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Reid additionally said the team spoke with the league, and there has been no talk of additional punishment.
Reid also addressed the personal side of Rice’s situation and the challenge of learning from it:
“It’s not an easy thing he’s going through. Life lessons are important, but we’re all given chances to learn. He’s in that position now.”
Rice will miss the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Reid said Rice is expected to be ready when training camp begins later this summer.
Kansas City will move through the rest of spring without the former SMU standout, but Reid’s comments leave the Chiefs expecting one of Patrick Mahomes’ top targets back for training camp this summer.
