Chelsea vs Barcelona predictions
Chelsea fans have mixed memories of facing Barcelona in the Champions League.
Ronaldinho’s genius toe poke was the standout goal in a clash at Stamford Bridge in March 2005, but Chelsea were 4-2 winners that night.
Barcelona eliminated the Blues the following season, however, and they also edged them out in 2008/09, drawing 1-1 in west London in a game best remembered for the controversial refereeing performance of Tom Ovrebo, who turned down several penalty appeals from Chelsea before Andres Iniesta’s decisive late strike.
Chelsea got their revenge in 2012. A backs-to-the-wall display at the Camp Nou ended with Fernando Torres scoring the goal that sent Roberto Di Matteo’s men through to the final.
These two sides have locked horns in just one tie since then: the round of 16 in 2017/18, with Barcelona winning 4-1 on aggregate. None of the players who featured in that game will be on the field on Tuesday. Indeed, both clubs have undergone significant changes over the last few years.
After a period in the Champions League doldrums, Barcelona are a continental force once more.
Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana reached the semi-finals of this competition last term. They would surely have given Paris Saint-Germain more of a game in the final than Inter, who had squeezed past Barca in the last four.
Chelsea were absent from Europe’s top table in 2023/24 and 2024/25, but their supporters will hope that triumphs in the Conference League and Club World Cup are the first steps on a path towards winning the biggest prizes of all once again.
There is not much to choose between Chelsea and Barcelona at the midway point of the league phase. Both teams have seven points to their name, with Barca’s superior goal difference putting them one spot above Chelsea in 11th.
Neither side is in the top eight at present, so there is plenty of work to be done if Chelsea and Barcelona are to avoid the knockout phase play-offs.
“We’re confident, we’re doing well,” Maresca said after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Burnley, looking ahead to Barcelona’s trip to London.
“Of course we can do things better, but it was important to win. We’re confident for Tuesday’s game.”

Chelsea vs Barcelona betting tips
Chelsea and Barcelona will butt heads in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Barcelona’s firepower to make difference
All things considered, Chelsea will be pleased with how the season has started.
Despite injuries to star man Cole Palmer and several key defenders, Maresca’s men are second in the Premier League and in a decent position in the Champions League.
Chelsea will be severely tested in their next two outings, however, with Arsenal set to visit Stamford Bridge a few days after this game against Barcelona.
When everything clicks in attack for the Blaugrana, they are virtually unstoppable. That is the worry for Chelsea.
This will not be a one-sided encounter, but Barca’s firepower may ultimately get them over the line.

Goals on the cards
No one could accuse Barcelona of being boring under Flick.
The Catalans play an attack-minded, adventurous style of football under their current manager, characterised by a high defensive line and pressing in advanced areas.
It is one of the reasons why Barcelona score so many goals, although it is also responsible for their defensive vulnerabilities against top opposition.
It is difficult to envisage a low-scoring affair at Stamford Bridge. Barcelona’s approach means both teams will get plenty of chances.
Barcelona’s four fixtures in the Champions League this season have seen an average of 4.75 goals per 90 minutes. Another goal-laden game awaits.

Lewandowski’s record sensational
Robert Lewandowski is the third-highest scorer in Champions League history, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
He has yet to open his account in the competition this season, however, partly because of a spell on the treatment table.
Lewandowski is fit and firing again now, which is bad news for Chelsea. He is not as mobile as he once was, but the Poland international only needs a half-chance to score.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah, who are likely to start at centre-back on Tuesday, should expect to be in for a busy evening up against one of the greatest strikers of all time.
