Chargers’ Derwin James shares immediate 3-word reaction to historic contract
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Chargers decided to lock up their star safety, Derwin James Jr., for an additional three seasons. James and the Bolts agreed on a three-year $75.6 million contract extension with $57.5 million guaranteed. The $25 million he will earn in each of those three seasons will be a new record among safeties in the NFL.
Shortly after the announcement, James Jr. shared a 3-word message on Instagram.
“GOD you unstoppable.”
It is nice to see the Chargers organization take care of the stars on the team. In the past, that hasn’t been the case. Even going back to the San Diego days, the Bolts let veteran players walk instead of signing them to contract extensions. That isn’t the case anymore.
James is regarded as one of the best safeties in the league, as he is very valuable all over the field. He plays multiple positions on defense and is a major reason why LA contained a Top 5 defense the last two seasons. James usually plays nickel, but he can be used in many different ways. He is a former First-Team All-Pro and is a four-time Second-Team All-Pro.
James Jr.’s career numbers are very respectable. He has 12 career interceptions, 19 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 684 tackles (433 solo). 2025 was an impressive season for James, but he had the fewest number of solo tackles in a season in his career by a decent margin (50). With the help of all the stars on the defense, the 5-time Pro Bowler hasn’t needed to be at the ball every play for a tackle.
