Champions League reporter suffers wardrobe malfunction on live TV in front of Wayne Rooney

Alex Aljoe was forced to explain why she had no shoes on during coverage of Newcastle United’s win over Qarabag.

The reporter was part of Prime Video’s coverage of the Champions League clash at St. James’ Park.

Prior to kick-off, Aljoe appeared on the pitch alongside former winner Wayne Rooney.

However, it was a missing feature of the presenter’s outfit which caught the eye.

Aljoe could be seen standing on the wet pitch without shoes on, exposing her white socks to the playing surface.

The 34-year-old was quick to explain there was an explanation for her lack of footwear, though.

She had worn heels for the match, which were not allowed on the pitch due to risks of damaging the playing surface.

Aljoe revealed: “I can explain, because I had heeled boots on which obviously would damage this beautiful pitch.

“So my socks are now sodden here on the pitch at St James’ Park. I need a pair of those boots don’t I?”

Rooney smiled during the awkward exchange as he agreed with the presenter.

Aljoe has previously caught the eye for her language skills during post-match interviews.

She has shown off her linguistic abilities by asking players questions in both English and their own language before translating the answers herself for viewers.

As well as her native English, Aljoe also speaks Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.

Her impressive skills have been displayed across roles with Premier League Productions, Sky Sports, Amazon Prime Video, DAZN and UEFA.

The pair were soon treated to another impressive European display from Newcastle as they eased into the last 16.

Eddie Howe’s side laid down a marker by clinching a 9-3 aggregate victory over Qarabag.

Following last week’s 6-1 win in Azerbaijan, goals from Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Sven Botman secured their progression.

The 3-2 second leg result was enough to advance from the knockout play-off round.

Newcastle will now await the results of Friday’s last 16 draw, which takes place at 11am.

They will face either Chelsea or Barcelona next month for a place in the quarter-finals.

It is the first time for 23 years that Newcastle have reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, the Magpies can now book their place in a European quarter-final for the first time since 2013.
