Arsenal, who finished top of the league phase table with victories in all eight of their matches, are probably the side who have benefited most from Friday’s draw, albeit aided by their earning of the top seed, having what looks on paper to be a kind route to the semi final.
The Gunners, top of the Premier League and in the final of the Carabao Cup as the fight for all four trophies this season, have been drawn Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 before a potential quarter final clash with either Bodo/Glimt or Sporting Lisbon.
Newcastle and Tottenham have both been drawn on the other side of that half of the draw, but each face difficult Spanish opposition in the last 16 as they take on Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively.

The other half of the draw looks a much tougher won to navigate, with PSG, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all fighting for one spot in May’s final.
Real Madrid and Manchester City have got quite familiar with the sight of each other in recent years, and have been drawn against each other in the knockout stage once again, making it now six of the last seven seasons the two teams have met.
The European giants will have faced off three times this season by the end of the campaign having already met in the league phase, and now take the title of perhaps the most eye-catching tie the last 16 draw has come up with.
The winner of that tie will take on either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in what would be yet another blockbuster quarter final tie.
Chelsea take on the defending European champions PSG in a blockbuster last 16 clash that sees a repeat of the summer’s Club World Cup final, and will play the winner of Liverpool’s clash with Galatasaray, opposition the Reds have lost already against once this season in the league phase.
One would have thought those ties would result in either a Liverpool v PSG, or Liverpool v Chelsea quarter final, either of which would certainly catch the eye.
