Carlos Mendoza calls out Mets third baseman for costly errors vs Diamondbacks

It has not been a good season for the New York Mets so far through the first 40 games of their 2026 campaign, as they currently find themselves in last place in the National League East division with a paltry 15-25 record.

Their most recent setback was a 5-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, during which third baseman Andy Ibáñez committed not one but two costly throwing errors. The second error proved more hurtful to the Mets, as it allowed Ildemaro Vargas to reach base leading off the sixth inning, eventually setting up back-to-back two-out run-scoring hits.

Manager Carlos Mendoza, clearly holding back some frustration, pulled no punches when a reporter asked him what he thought of the throwing errors by Ibáñez, noting that in Major League Baseball, those kinds of mistakes just can’t happen.

“Those are routine plays,” the skipper said via SNY. “At this level, you expect those plays to be made, it’s as simple as that.”

Meanwhile, Ibáñez chalked it up to “just one of those things” afterward in the clubhouse.

“I stood a little bit wide, and it just got away from me,” Ibáñez said afterward via Yahoo Sports, speaking through an interpreter. “It’s one of those things where you don’t want it to happen, but it’s baseball.”

Ibáñez, who had played the last several years with the Detroit Tigers organization, was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers on a one-year, $1.2 million contract before being DFA’d; he was claimed by the Athletics, for whom he appeared in 11 games before once again being DFA’d. He was claimed by the Mets on April 30.
