Cardinals call up 2025 Minor League Pitcher of Year for another exciting debut

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz from Triple-A, the team announced on Sunday. Mautz was the Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2025. The Cardinals also announced that right-handed pitcher Matt Svanson was optioned to Triple-A while Ryan Fernandez was returned to Triple-A after being the 27th man during Saturday’s doubleheader.

Mautz’s promotion comes after outfielder Bryan Torres made his MLB debut after 11 professional seasons on Saturday. The outfielder made the most of his big league debut, as Torres hit a home run. Mautz will look to have a big debut as well.

Mautz looks like he could make an impact sooner rather than later. In 2025, the left-handed pitcher turned in a 2.98 ERA across 25 starts at Double-A. He has spent the 2026 campaign with the Triple-A team, and Mautz has turned in a 2.90 ERA up to this point. Mautz is clearly ready for an opportunity in MLB.

It will be interesting to see how the 24-year-old performs against a Cincinnati Reds ball club that features an inconsistent offense.

The Cardinals have been one of the better stories in the game. St. Louis was not expected to compete this year. It seemed as if the ball club was rebuilding. In all reality, the Cardinals are in a rebuild, yet the ball club is finding ways to win games.

They currently hold a 29-22 record which is good for second place in the competitive National League Central standings. The Cardinals only trail the Milwaukee Brewers by two games at the moment.
