Capitals rumors: When Alex Ovechkin will make decision on future, per LeBrun
There have been rumors about when Alex Ovechkin will announce his retirement. Now, there is another report outlining a timeline for when the all-time goals leader will decide whether he plays another season, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
“I would venture to guess we’ll get a decision from Alex Ovechkin on his future sometime in July. The Washington Capitals’ front office has kept the lines of communication open with him since the end of the season, and there’s a pretty good level of understanding of where things are trending, but everyone involved just wants to make sure No. 8 is 100 percent sure before committing to his decision, either way,” LeBrun wrote.
Ovechkin is considering his options, and whether he returns to the Capitals will hinge on many factors. If this is it, he will have finished his career with one Stanley Cup victory and multiple playoff appearances. Ovechkin would want to contend if he returns, and that has been the scenario he would like. But the Caps missed the playoffs this past season, and there is no indication of whether they could be a true contender.
The Caps will always acquiesce with Ovechkin, as he has given them a Stanley Cup win and many memories. Additionally, he has been the face of the franchise. Despite the rumored timeline, LeBrun indicated there is no rush.
“The Caps aren’t putting any pressure on him whatsoever. He’ll be ready when he’s ready,” LeBrun added.
The Capitals will focus on the NHL Draft this month while they await Ovechkin’s decision. Recently, the team has begun building with newer players and focusing on a future where they can contend consistently again.
