Canadiens put up putrid effort in overtime with 0 shots on goal

It was a back-and-forth affair between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final in front of a rocking sellout crowd at Bell Centre that was ultimately sent home disappointed.

The Canadiens now trail the series two games to one after Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho deflected a shot from teammate Andrei Svechnikov past goaltender Jakub Dobes at the 14:06 mark of overtime, giving them a 3-2 victory.

Even more concerning was the fact that not only did the Canadiens manage a total of 12 shots on goal for the entire game, but they failed to get a single puck on net during overtime.

Just seconds into overtime, Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki was sprung on a partial breakaway attempt, but his shot missed the net; the Canadiens did also come an inch away from winning, but a would-be goal from defenseman Mike Matheson, who scored earlier in the game, rang off the iron.

The scoring was opened in the first period by Hurricanes veteran defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who tallied his first goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Montreal responded thanks to Matheson, who got his second playoff goal. However, the Hurricanes restored the lead late in the period thanks to a tally from Taylor Hall, his fourth goal.

Once again, it was Montreal who had the answer in the form of a goal from last season’s Calder Trophy winner, defenseman Lane Hutson.

Dobes was busy in net, making 35 saves. Meanwhile, Andersen only needed to make 10 saves on the 12 shots that he faced. Game 4 between the two clubs will be played on Wednesday evening.
