Canadiens’ offense firing on all cylinders with feat not seen in 20 years

The Montreal Canadiens are riding high from their Game 3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night. Montreal allowed the first goal of the contest, but took over in the second period. Alex Newhook scored two goals to lead the effort as Montreal skated away with a 6-2 win on home ice.

The Canadiens’ offense was slow off the mark in Game 1. However, they have come alive in the most recent games. Montreal scored five on the road in their win in Game 2. And, as mentioned, they scored six goals against the Sabres on Sunday in front of their home fans.

This is a notable feat for the team, as one could imagine. This is the first time the Canadiens have scored five or more goals in consecutive playoff games since 2006, according to Sportsnet Stats. They scored six in Games 1 and 2 of the 2006 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Montreal has taken over this series thanks to its offensive output. Specifically, a recent surge from Alex Newhook has helped the Habs dominate the Sabres. Newhook has four goals in his last two games, and has been a driving force in his team’s wins in Games 2 and 3.

Goaltending has also been much better, as well. Rookie Jakub Dobes faced 16 shots on goal in Game 1, but allowed four goals. Since then, he has made 54 saves on 57 shots. This is good for a .947% percentage over the last two games.

The Canadiens have a lot of momentun, and an opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this series. Montreal hosts the Sabres once again on Tuesday night for a very crucial Game 4 in this second-round series.
