Canadiens’ Alex Newhook completes multiple Game 7 feats vs. Sabres

The Montreal Canadiens are off to the Eastern Conference Finals after a massive Game 7 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Montreal has not skated in the East Final since 2014. However, thanks to Alex Newhook, they are only one step away from the Stanley Cup Final.

Newhook has been an absolute star for the Habs in this series. And he showed up big when Montreal needed him most. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime to send his team to the East Final.

With this goal, Newhook became the fourth player in Canadiens history to score an OT goal in Game 7, according to NHL Public Relations. The others to achieve this feat are Russ Courtnall, Claude Lemieux, and Yvon Lambert.

Furthermore, he is the second player in NHL history to score multiple series-clinching goals in Game 7 during a single postseason. The only other player to do this was Nathan Horton, who did so with the 2011 Boston Bruins en route to a Stanley Cup triumph over the Vancouver Canucks.

Newhook’s ascension during this postseason is certainly something to behold. He has been a quality secondary scoring option over the last few seasons. In the 2025-26 regular season, he scored 13 goals and 25 points.

In the playoffs, he has come alive. He scored the series-clinching goal in the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning. And he followed that up by scoring six goals against the Sabres, including Monday night’s OT winner.

The Canadiens will take on the Carolina Hurricanes in the East Final. Game 1 of that series begins on Thursday night. Montreal certainly hopes Newhook can continue his hot streak, and potentially help them make the Stanley Cup Final.
