Caitlin Clark breaks silence on Stephanie White sideline exchange as Fever coach addresses relationship

Caitlin Clark and Stephanie White have each spoken out on that viral heated exchange.

During the Indiana Fever‘s 100-84 defeat to the Portland Fire on Saturday, a video clip surfaced of WNBA superstar Clark getting into it with her head coach during a timeout.

Frustrations appeared to boil over with White seen in the clip – which went viral – pointing her fingers and directing some words in her star player’s direction.

She could even be seen slapping her knee in frustration.

For Clark, she was benched after scoring just six points in 22 minutes of action in what was arguably one of the worst performances of her career to date in a season where she has already faced criticism over her development – or apparent lack thereof.

But while it looked as though there was trouble brewing in Indiana, Clark has argued quite the contrary.

“First of all, two people being competitive. Two people that really want to win,” Clark explained to reporters on Monday. “I think a lot of those things happen all the time.

“And I know there’s a camera on me, and that’s how it’s going to be, but there’s a lot of people out there in the media or on TV that they think they know a lot of things, and they’re just blatantly wrong about a lot of things.”

A debate was sparked over whether the alleged disharmony within the team was down to frustrations over Clark’s role in the team, with some having argued that she receives special treatment on the court by officials.

“I ride for Steph. I ride for these girls. Steph has my back more than anybody,” she continued.

“So, you know, nobody in our locker room, or Steph, or our coaching staff thought twice about it. It’s just another example of what everybody, all of you, want to blow up and make something that is just lost and not in reality.”

The 24-year-old also delved more into detail over what her relationship with her head coach is like behind the scenes.

“It’s great,” Clark said of her relationship with White. “When I got hurt, at the Connecticut game last year, I bawled in Steph’s arms. That’s somebody I will ride for for the rest of my life.

“Those are the moments that people behind, you know, people don’t see that. People that just sit on their phones all day, they don’t see those moments.

“They don’t see the moments where we come into work. They don’t see the moments that really absolutely suck, that people have your back, but they think they know everything. In reality, they don’t have a clue.”

White also dismisses incident

Although the clip was out of context, and the pair were caught up in the heat of the moment, White also took some time on Monday to address the exchange with her two-time WNBA All-Star, further extinguishing the fire of claims that there is animosity between the two.

“I think what happened in that moment is I was challenging a player. It’s coaching. It’s what it is,” White told reporters. “I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports most of the time.

“My relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her. We have a great relationship. And I think that the narrative of people trying to make it something that it’s not is just, you know, taking sensationalism to try to get some clicks and all the other stuff.

“She wants to be coached. I want her to help me be a better coach. We’re both competitive. We’re both stubborn. You know, we’re more alike than different. And, you know, hopefully we continue to bring the best out of each other.”

White even went on as far to accuse the age of digital media for accentuating the whole ordea.

“It’s not a new thing. It’s just new because everything that she does gets clicks. That’s how everybody makes money, right? That’s how everybody makes money. So it’s not a new thing,” White said.

“When there was player confrontation/tension/coaching 10 years ago when I was doing this, or 15 years ago when I was doing this, however long it was, it wasn’t on social media.

“That was just getting started, right? It happens in every sport. It happens in all walks of life. You know, so this is not anything that’s new, and it’s not a story.”

After a season in which they won the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup and reached the Eastern Conference Finals, despite an injured superstar, the expectation to deliver results was placed upon Clark and the Fever’s shoulders heading into the 2026 season.

So far, though, the Fever are on a two-game losing skid, and sit in fourth in the East with a .500 record after eight games, despite the former No. 1 overall pick leading the team in assists (8.1), steals (1,3) and blocks (0.9).

Furthermore, she is second in scoring on the team with 20.1 points per game, behind Kelsey Mitchell’s 20.6.

Clark and co will hope to get back to winning ways when they host her long-time on-court rival Angel Reese and her new team Atlanta Dream following her blockbuster trade during the off-season.
