Burnley vs Manchester City predictions

Advantage Manchester City.

A 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday has made Pep Guardiola’s side the new favourites for the Premier League title.

City are still not top of the table, but they will rise there for the first time since the opening weekend if they beat Burnley on Wednesday.

There is still a long way to go in this two-way title tussle. Although City could be first by the weekend, Arsenal will then play twice more before Guardiola’s men are back in league action.

In a best-case scenario for Arsenal, they would be six points clear at the summit of the standings by the time City face Everton on May 4. And it is far from guaranteed that City will win every game from this point on.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the momentum has swung decisively towards Guardiola and co.

It was a pretty even game at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, but City did a better job of taking the chances they created, as goals from Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland got them over the line.

Depending on how West Ham United fare against Crystal Palace on Monday evening, a defeat for Burnley in this game could send them down to the Championship.

In truth, it is a matter of when rather than if relegation is confirmed for Scott Parker’s men, who lost 4-1 to Nottingham Forest over the weekend.

This looks like a straightforward assignment for City, who have the chance to knock Arsenal off top spot for the first time since October.

Burnley vs Manchester City betting tips

Will Manchester City have everything their own way against Burnley on Wednesday?

Expect one-way traffic at Turf Moor

Manchester City are currently one behind Arsenal on goal difference, which means they will at least draw level on that metric with a win at Turf Moor.

Guardiola will not settle for being level, though. The title could ultimately be decided on goal difference, so this feels like a golden opportunity for City to establish a healthy lead.

City won the reverse fixture 5-1 back in September, although the half-time score on that occasion was 1-1.

This time around, City look well positioned to win both halves. Burnley are struggling for both form and belief, and City are primed to take full advantage.

Burnley have run out of steam

Sunderland and Leeds United will avoid an immediate return to the Championship this season, but Burnley are on their way back to the second tier. They have never really looked capable of staying up.

Parker’s charges have not been higher or lower than 19th place since losing to Chelsea in November. Only one of their last 23 top-flight matches has produced a win.

Burnley have scored the second-fewest goals in the division, while they have drawn a blank in three of their last five outings.

This is an excellent chance for Manchester City to keep their 14th clean sheet of the campaign.

Semenyo to the fore

The Premier League Golden Boot will almost certainly go to one of Haaland or Igor Thiago, but Antoine Semenyo is on track for a place on the podium.

Semenyo sits third in the charts having scored 10 goals for Bournemouth and five for Manchester City following his move north in the winter window.

He has been a little quieter of late, with Cherki taking charge of the City attack, but the Ghana international still has a big role to play.

Burnley’s backline shipped four goals to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, so Semenyo should cause Parker’s team problems at Turf Moor.
