Bulls rumors: 2 more candidates emerge in Chicago’s coaching search

The Chicago Bulls are in the midst of a head coaching search after the club and former head coach Billy Donovan mutually parted ways. While the franchise has already cast a wide net, rumors reveal two more possible candidates could be booked for interviews soon.

Reports indicate that the Bulls are planning to seek permission to interview Charlotte Hornets assistant Lamar Skeeter and Atlanta Hawks assistant Ryan Schmidt, according to NBA Insider Jake Fischer. Neither candidate has ever been a head coach at the NBA level.

“Two more candidates that the Bulls plan to seek permission to interview for Chicago’s coaching search, per sources: Charlotte assistant Lamar Skeeter, and Atlanta assistant Ryan Schmidt,” reported Fischer.

Skeeter earned his first coaching gig as an assistant for the Canton Charge, the G-League affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 37-year-old potential Bulls’ candidate got his foot in the door at the NBA after accepting a player development and video intern role with the Atlanta Hawks, which he held from 2013 to 2014. Skeeter served as an assistant for the Utah Jazz for 10 years before being hired as an assistant by the Hornets in 2024.

As for Schmidt, who is 42 years old, he got his first opportunity in coaching as an assistant for the Raptors 905, the G-League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors. He was named the head coach of the College Park Skyhawks, the G-League affiliate of the Atlanta Hawks, in 2023, while also working as an assistant under Quinn Snyder as an assistant. After the 2024 campaign, Schmidt focused solely on being an assistant for Snyder.

Both candidates suggest the Bulls may be considering young, creative minds for the head coaching position. The franchise should be conducting several interviews in the coming weeks before announcing an official hire.
