Bucks rumors: Is Taylor Jenkins hire a ‘precursor’ to Ja Morant reunion? ClutchPoints insiders connect trade dots
The Milwaukee Bucks hiring Taylor Jenkins to be their next head coach has got some wondering if Memphis Grizzlies star guard Ja Morant might be on his way there as well.
Jenkins served as Morant’s head coach on the Grizzlies from 2020 to 2025 before Memphis suddenly fired him near the end of the 2024-25 regular season. Morant’s time with the franchise might also be running out as Memphis is heading another direction after trading Morant’s co-star Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz.
ClutchPoints’ NBA insiders Brett Siegel and Tomer Azarly reflected on the Bucks’ hiring during an April 23 edition of the Clutch Scoops show. They consider the possibility of Morant reuniting with Jenkins as the pair had a great connection with another on the Grizzlies.
“Ja Morant and Taylor Jenkins had a great relationship when he was in the Memphis Grizzlies. I think many people were kind of shocked to see Taylor on the way out or fired the way he was. And again, I think Giannis and Ja Morant, we’ve said, have interest in playing with one another. This wouldn’t surprise me if this is one of the few moves towards making that happen, not saying it’s going to but it’s not nothing, is what I’ll say. I think there’s definitely something there,” Azarly said at the 31:45 mark.
“Ja’s clearly on his way out of Memphis, I think all indications are he’s not going to be there next year. They don’t really want him back, they avoided having him do media, they didn’t give him a jersey to give out to fans in the final game of the year. Like, they have just tried to phase him out completely, despite him wanting to stay there. So this could be a little precursor to maybe Ja and Giannis teaming up in Milwaukee. Who knows? But I think still a lot to be determined.”
What lies ahead for Bucks after Taylor Jenkins hire
It would provide the Bucks significant life for Ja Morant to come over to the franchise and reunite with Taylor Jenkins once again.
Jenkins had a solid stint throughout his six seasons with the Grizzlies. He put together a 250-214 record in the regular season and 9-14 in the playoffs, making the postseason three times (four before Memphis fired him).
Morant got to enjoy stable development under Jenkins, his first NBA coach. Throughout the six seasons he played under him, he averaged 22.6 points, 7.4 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game throughout 307 games.
Milwaukee will hope to make big moves in the offseason to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo with the franchise. They missed the playoffs this year after finishing with a 32-50 record in the 2025-26 campaign.
