Brutal stat further proves Spurs had Thunder’s number in 2025-26
The Oklahoma City Thunder fell short against the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals, further proving how difficult it is to retain the championship in the NBA.
The Thunder battled the Spurs in Game 7 without Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell, who were out with a hamstring injury and a calf injury, respectively. It became too much of a handicap as San Antonio advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since winning the title in 2014.
Williams and Mitchell only played three games each in the best-of-seven series.
Only seven teams in league history have been back-to-back champions.
The Thunder and the Spurs could be a budding rivalry, especially since they battled 12 times this season. Yahoo! Sports! Kendall Baker pointed out that the Thunder were 4-8 versus the Spurs and 71-14 against the rest of the NBA.
“In other words, San Antonio was responsible for 36.4% of OKC’s losses (8 of 22),” added the post.

The Spurs snapped the Thunder’s franchise-record 16-game winning streak in the semifinals of the NBA Cup. San Antonio defeated Oklahoma City two more times before the latter finally got one in January. The Spurs beat the Thunder again in February.
Their head-to-head in the regular season proved to be ominous. Despite most of its players lacking postseason experience, San Antonio mustered enough strength and composure to eliminate Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did not offer any excuses and admitted that the Spurs were a better team in Game 7, acknowledging that the Thunder need to get better.
