Browns QB Shedeur Sanders gives early review of new coach Todd Monken
The Cleveland Browns held a voluntary minicamp on Tuesday, just two days before the 2026 NFL Draft. During that time, Todd Monken gave each quarterback a fair share of reps with the first team offense. After practice, Shedeur Sanders revealed his early review of his new head coach.
While talking with media members, the 24-year-old quarterback claimed Monken’s approach to teaching him the playbook matches how he learns, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. Overall, Sanders’ early impression of Monken seems to be a good one.
“I think I know how I learn,” said Sanders. “Knowing how I know how to learn is great. And the coaches are able to communicate in different ways to help you learn. That’s why I appreciate the coaching staff, honestly… So I’m just thankful that my coaches now are extremely embracing me.”
Shedeur Sanders on learning Todd Monken’s playbook: “You could say somebody don’t know how to learn but it’s like, how did the person get all the way to this level if he don’t know how to learn? … Does he not know how to learn or do I not know how to communicate … So I’m just… pic.twitter.com/apVRiGQfjA

After a roller coaster of a rookie year, Sanders aims for bigger things in his second season in the NFL. While he seems to enjoy Todd Monken early on, the starting quarterback role is up for grabs. The Browns’ new coach has claimed before that it’s essentially a three-horse race between Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel.
While Shedeur Sanders got the initial first-team reps on Tuesday, Monken plans on giving each quarterback a fair shake playing with the first-team offense throughout the offseason. The Browns’ quarterback battle will likely be one of the most talked-about situations in the league throughout most of the summer.
Sanders is coming off a rookie campaign that ended with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and a 56.6% completion percentage. The former Colorado Buffalo also threw 10 interceptions in eight games played, starting in seven. Cleveland was 3-4 in the games Sanders started at quarterback.
