Brittney Griner lands 7-figure contract with Sun

Brittney Griner is finalizing a seven-figure contract to join the Connecticut Sun, Sun sideline reporter Terrika Foster-Brasby reported Friday night. The deal places the 10-time WNBA All-Star in Connecticut as the franchise prepares for its planned relocation to Houston in 2027.

Griner, 35, is a Houston native and previously spent 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, where she developed into one of the league’s best centers. She moved to the Atlanta Dream on a one-year deal ahead of the 2025 season.

In Atlanta, Griner appeared in 39 games and posted career-low averages of 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 1.2 blocks while playing 20.8 minutes per game. Her role shifted during the season, including a mid-season injury that contributed to a bench assignment for the 6-foot-9 center.

Still, Atlanta finished with a franchise-best 30-14 record. Griner’s late-season playing time decreased further under head coach Karl Smesko, and she played only 32 minutes in the playoffs as the Dream were eliminated in a first-round upset by the Indiana Fever in a three-game series.

Across her career, Griner has built a decorated resume that includes a WNBA championship in 2014, scoring titles in 2017 and 2019, and Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014 and 2015. She is also a three-time Olympic gold medalist, winning in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
