British boxer Raven Chapman airlifted to hospital with bleed on brain after sparring as statement given

Raven Chapman was rushed to hospital and placed in an induced coma after suffering a bleed on the brain during sparring.

Chapman, 32, is a featherweight who during the height of her career challenged for the WBC world title against Skye Nicholson in 2024 on the undercard of Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol.

But her career will now be at a halt, after she was rushed to hospital from a gym in Denmark after a sparring session on July 24.

Chapman suffered a bleed on the brain and was airlifted in a rush to receive treatment.

Doctors decided to undergo emergency surgery and she was stabilised, being placed into a coma, before now being woken up.

Statement from team Chapman after injury

A statement from her team read:  “On Friday, July 24 , Raven unexpectedly collapsed after a sparring session in Denmark.

“Emergency services were called immediately, and she was airlifted to a local hospital. She was diagnosed with a brain haematoma and cerebral oedema.

“Raven underwent emergency surgery immediately. The procedure successfully stopped the bleeding and helped stabilise the swelling. She was then placed in a medically induced coma.

“Over the past day, she has been taken off the sedatives and is continuing to receive treatment while awaiting medically supervised repatriation to a hospital in the UK, where her rehabilitation is expected to take some time.

“Her doctors are doing everything they can to support her recovery, and we remain hopeful as she continues to fight through this incredibly difficult time.

“Raven’s family are in Denmark supporting her during this incredibly difficult time. We kindly ask that their privacy is respected.

“At this stage, this is the only update we are able to provide. If there are any significant developments, we will share further information when it is appropriate to do so.

“Thank you for your continued support. Please keep Raven and her loved ones in your thoughts during this challenging time.”

Figures close to Chapman have launched a GoFundMe page to help pay for her medical treatment and offer financial support to her family.

She will now face a big health battle, with a period of rehabilitation in hospital set to commence.

The Norwich native had suffered back-to-back defeats against Nicholson and Karriss Artingstall.

But she had gotten back to winning ways with a stoppage victory over Georgia Klein in June.

Of course, Chapman’s long-term future in the sport is now up in the air.

It is the second boxer this week to have suffered a major injury with Lee Reeves stretchered to hospital after his outing at the weekend.

Reeves was rushed for medical care after a brutal stoppage loss to Garry Cully and is in a critical but stable condition according to promoter Frank Warren.
