Brendan Sorsby’s former coach sounds off on Texas Tech departure

It appears that Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s college career is over. Sorsby announced he would be leaving Texas Tech to enter the NFL supplemental draft. There was an ongoing saga over whether Sorsby would be eligible to play for the Red Raiders, following a gambling scandal he was involved in.

Sorsby’s former head coach at one of his other schools is now speaking out about the situation. That is Cincinnati football coach Scott Satterfield.

“I just wish Brendan the best in his future endeavors, and it certainly looks like now he’s going to the NFL, so I wish him nothing but the best as he heads that route,” Satterfield said, per Bearcat Journal and reported by On3. “It certainly has been a wild ride over the last month or so, and I think my comment would be: ‘I’m pulling for Brendan in his future endeavors in football.’”

Sorsby admitted to gambling on his team’s college games in the past. As a result, the NCAA was not going to allow him to play college football in 2026.

A judge in Texas ruled instead that Sorsby could play this upcoming season, which sent off a firestorm. The NCAA as well as Texas Tech’s member schools in the Big 12 were preparing to fight Texas Tech in court over the situation.

That fight now ends since Sorsby is leaving the Red Raiders.

“I am grateful for the support from my family, my Tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue,” Sorsby said in a statement, per CBS Sports. “As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.”

Sorsby played at Cincinnati for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons. He played at Indiana before that.
