Thursday night will see Braga take part in just their second ever European semi final, 15 years after their first venture into the last four of a UEFA competition.
Carlos Vicens’ side came back from two goals down in their quarter final clash in Seville against Real Betis to book their place in Thursday’s semi final first leg, a match they’ll be looking to get back to winning ways in after their six match unbeaten run came to an end over the weekend.
Vicens took over as Braga manager in the summer following four years as Pep Guardiola’s assistant manager at Manchester City, a spell in which he won eight trophies, including three Premier Leagues, an FA Cup and a Champions League, the latter two as part a historic first ever continental treble for the club.
The Archbishops fell to a 2-1 defeat at Santa Clara on Sunday evening, but stayed fourth in the Primeira Liga table, five points ahead of Famalicao below them and now 16 behind Sporting Lisbon above them, with just three league games still to play.
The Portuguese side’s European campaign started all the way back in July with a 0-0 draw in Bulgaria against Levski Sofia in the second round of Europa League qualifying, a tie they needed extra time to progress through, and now find themselves in the last four nine months later.
The 2011 Europa League runners up have lost just one of their last nine European matches, and just one of their last 12 home games in UEFA competitions and will be eager to build a lead to take over to Germany for next week’s second leg.
Braga head into Thursday’s clash with just one home defeat since November, a run spanning 14 matches, but have only won one of their last four.
Freiburg make the trip to Portugal having lost each of their last two matches, a 4-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund on Sunday evening piling more misery on them following their 2-1 defeat at Stuttgart after extra time in the semi finals of the DFB Pokal.
Julian Schuster’s side had won six of their previous seven matches ahead of that semi final, and will now be hoping it’s second semi final lucky this season as he leads the club he played for for 10 years into the last four in a European competition for the first time ever.
Sunday’s defeat at Dortmund in preparation for Thursday’s Europa League clash saw the ‘Breisgau Brazilians’ drop down to eighth place in the Bundesliga and outside of the European places, now behind 2022 Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt on goal difference with just three matches of the season remaining.
The German side have made light work of their Europa League knockout phase campaign so far, beating Celta Vigo 6-1 on aggregate in the quarter final following their 5-2 victory over Genk in the last 16.
Thursday’s match will be the first ever competitive meeting between the two teams.
Both teams will see this tie as a very winnable clash as they each bid for a first ever European trophy. Neither team have anything else still to play for this season so will both be going all in for victory on Thursday. Bet on the action and get £50 in free bets with Betfred.
