Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer’s brutal outing vs. Guardians leaves him 1 strikeout short of impressive feat

Max Scherzer sustained a brutal night with his short-lived time on the mound in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 8-6 loss to the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night.

Scherzer is going through the 18th year of his professional career in the majors, his second with the Blue Jays. He stands out as one of the most accomplished pitchers throughout his time in the league, winning three Cy Young trophies and two World Series titles.

However, the start to the 2026 campaign hasn’t been kind to the veteran pitcher. He lasted just 2.1 innings throughout his start on the mound, conceding six hits and seven runs within the first three innings of the game. His inability to get a strikeout also puts his career statistics into perspective, via Talkin’ Baseball.

“Max Scherzer did not record a strikeout tonight, leaving him at 3,499 for his career. He allowed seven earned runs in 2.1 innings as his ERA balloons to 9.64 on the season in five starts,” the post read.

How Max Scherzer, Blue Jays played against Guardians

The Blue Jays tried to cut down the deficit that Max Scherzer left, but they ended up falling short in their loss to the Guardians in the series opener.

Cleveland led 7-3 after the first three innings of the game, which ended Scherzer’s time on the mound. Toronto added more runs while limiting Cleveland to just one run, but it wasn’t enough as they couldn’t find more holes in the Guardians’ defense.

Toronto fell to a 10-15 record on the season, holding the fourth spot in the AL East Division standings. They are above the Boston Red Sox while trailing the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Following their Game 2 clash with the Guardians on April 25 at 3:07 p.m. ET, the Blue Jays will prepare for the series finale. That contest will commence on April 26 as first pitch will take place at 1:37 p.m. ET.
