Blackhawks sign 2nd-round pick after leading KHL in goals

Roman Kantserov just led the KHL in goals as a 21-year-old — and now he’s taking his talents to North America. The forward signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks at a $1.075 million cap hit, the team announced on Thursday.

Originally selected in the second round, 44th overall, by the Hawks in the 2023 NHL Draft, Kantserov lit up the elite Russian league, scoring 36 goals and adding 28 assists for 64 points in just 63 games with Metallurg Magnitogorsk.

That’s the most by a player under the age of 22 in the history of the league, per the official release. He also chipped in eight points in 15 postseason games, and also represented Magnitogorsk at the 2026 KHL All-Star Game.

The 5-foot-9 forward should add another element to Chicago’s attack next season, especially as he has significant playoff experience. He registered 13 points in 23 playoff games in 2024, as Metallurg won the Gagarin Cup Championship.

Kantserov, who plays right wing but shoots left, could be an immediate option to play alongside Connor Bedard in 2026-27. Those two could create quite the duo if they can find some chemistry in training camp.

By all accounts, that draft selection looks like a steal for GM Kyle Davidson and Chicago’s front office, and it’s expected he will play a significant role right off the bat.

Already flush with skilled young forwards in Bedard, Frank Nazar and 2025 No. 3 overall pick Anton Frondell, Kantserov adds another element to a Hawks team that is looking to take the next step in 2026-27.

Chicago finished 29-39-14 in 2025-26, good for last place in the Central Division and 31st in overall NHL standings.
