Beloved 10-year ESPN broadcasting veteran brutally cut by network as statement released

ESPN have let go of one of their most experienced hosts in a surprise move.

Arda Ocal announced on social media that he had been let go from ESPN after a decade of service to the network.

“I got let go from ESPN this morning. It’s all good, I’ll be fine. 10 years is a decent run,” Ocal posted on X.

“I think I’m just gonna take some time off before I decide what’s next. Good vibes and acts of kindness.”

During his decade-long tenure, Ocal had established himself as one of ESPN’s more versatile broadcasters.

His most known work was covering the NHL, hosting ‘The Drop’ which was a live digital pregame show that launched in 2021.

He also served as studio host for In the Crease, the network’s postgame NHL show on ESPN+. He was a regular on ESPN’s Stanley Cup Playoff studio coverage, working alongside Steve Levy, Mark Messier, and P.K. Subban.

Outside of hockey, he also contributed to SportsCenter, SportsNation and The Ocho.

When Ocal posted the news of his shocking dismissal, fans were quick to express their thoughts on the move and give their well-wishes.

“So sorry to hear Arda, you inspired me and many others to go into sports journalism. ESPN is losing a great one,” one fan commented.

“All of my favorite personalities at ESPN keep getting let go. Hope the future for you is bright,” a second added.

“Your personality and energy are impossible to replicate and whoever picks you up next is getting one of the best in the business. Enjoy the time off. You’ve earned it,” a third said.

“Arda, I have no doubt you will land on your feet in a better spot. Sorry to hear this news, wishing you all the best,” a fourth said.

“Sorry to hear, you are a class act and so amazing at what you do,” a fifth concluded.

His departure comes during a period of transition at the network. In April, they completed a $3bn takeover of NFL Network that left some employees worried about the future of their jobs.

They have not had widespread layoffs in a while, but The Puck’s John Ourand reported that 30 employees, presumably including Ocal, are set to be laid off.

This is due to ESPN’s YouTube TV carriage dispute from the autumn. The report notes that the network lost close to $100m during a 15-day blackout from YouTube TV.

However, Ourand’s report also notes that their acquisition of NFL Network has nothing to do with the takeover.

The network has had a handful of prominent layoffs in recent years, from Danny Kanell to Jeff Van Gundy, and Ocal can be added to that list.
