Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid predictions
The first leg of this Champions League quarter-final pitted two of Europe’s heavyweight clubs against each other at one of the continent’s most iconic stadiums. It did not disappoint.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich played out a classic at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu last week.
Luis Diaz gave Bayern the lead towards the end of a first half which they dominated, before Harry Kane doubled the visitors’ advantage within seconds of the second period getting under way.
Madrid rallied thereafter, though, and Kylian Mbappe halved the deficit after a delicious cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s charges had chances to equalise but they found Manuel Neuer in inspired form between the Bayern posts.
The Bundesliga giants played the better football on the night and were ultimately worthy winners, yet Madrid still created enough opportunities to have got something from the match.
“We talked at half-time about keeping it tight but [conceded] quickly after the break,” Arbeloa said afterwards.
Los Blancos are certainly not out of this. After all, Madrid have made a habit of mounting spectacular Champions League comebacks in recent years. It would be a mistake to write them off.
“Mostly, in the second half we did a bit better. Our goal gives us hope but this was a night when we knew we were playing a talented, dangerous team.”
At the same time, Bayern are obviously favourites from here. The home advantage belongs to them on Wednesday, and they know that even a draw would be sufficient to set up a semi-final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool.
Vincent Kompany’s team warmed up for this game by thumping St Pauli 5-0 on Saturday, an empathic victory that came even though the Bayern boss heavily rotated his team. They are now a maximum of four points away from the Bundesliga title.
Madrid, for their part, were held to a 1-1 home draw by Girona, a result which in effect ended their hopes of finishing first in La Liga.
“We are happy,” Kompany said after the first leg. “Any win at the Bernabeu is a good result. We can build on it and the next game is at home.
“They were incredibly dangerous at times – look at their quality – but we stayed dangerous too. Now our objective is to go and win at home.”
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid betting tips
Will Bayern Munich or Real Madrid make it through to the semi-finals of the Champions League?
Honours even at Allianz?
This is a tough game to call. Overall, Bayern Munich look like a better team than Real Madrid right now. In a league campaign, they would probably finish above the Blancos.
But there is something about Madrid and the Champions League, and a one-goal deficit is far from insurmountable.
Madrid may also benefit from Bayern being caught in two minds. Should Kompany’s side stick or twist with a 2-1 aggregate lead?
However, with the home crowd behind them on Wednesday, Bayern are our pick to reach the semi-finals. Perhaps they will have to settle for a draw on the night, though.
Choose a draw at 15/4 with bet365
Madrid to have last say
Despite being a goal to the good already, Bayern Munich will look to play on the front foot from the first whistle on Wednesday.
Depending on the scoreline, they may take a step back as the game wears on, particularly if Real Madrid are forced to take a few more risks in search of a goal.
The odds on Madrid striking last are tempting. Perhaps it will be a consolation goal, or perhaps it will be a strike to put them level or in the lead.
Either way, it is worth a wager on the Blancos being the last team to make the net bulge at the Allianz Arena.
Back Real Madrid to score last at 6/4 with bet365
Kane to strike again
The fact that Kane is odds-on to score against Real Madrid in a Champions League quarter-final tells you everything about the season he is having.
Kane’s strike at the Bernabeu last time out moved him onto 49 for the season. The England captain would love to reach his first ever half-century against Madrid on the biggest stage of all.
After being given the weekend off, he will be chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch on Tuesday.
Bayern are not a one-man team, but it goes without saying that Kane is crucial to their chances of winning the Champions League this season. He is ready to make his mark on the second leg of this star-studded quarter-final.
Tip Harry Kane to score any time at 4/6 with bet365
