Athletics’ Tyler Soderstrom makes honest admission on building off breakout 2025 season

There’s no denying the young core of the Athletics with such names as Brent Rooker, Nick Kurtz, and others, as some have already received contract extensions. One of them was young Athletics star Tyler Soderstrom and the $86 million contract extension he received, as he spoke about building off his 2025 campaign.

In the 2025 season, he would record a .276 batting average to go along with 25 home runs and 93 RBIs in 158 games, which was no doubt a breakout season for the 24-year-old. He would speak to The MLB Network about bouncing off the season, and if he did any tinkering with his swing.

“Not really, like you said, you know, kind of broke out last year,” Soderstrom said. “So I just kind of went to the offseason trying to build off, you know, kind of what I’m doing and, you know, continue to just get better day in and day out. Just kind of learning my swing and what kind of work for me. But yeah, it’s been a good off-season, so ready to kind of keep it going in 2026.”

Soderstrom also made a move to left field after being drafted as a catcher in 2020, but then was primarily playing first base, though the transition has been “fun.”

“Left’s been good,” Soderstrom said. “You know, I didn’t really know what to expect going out there last year, but, you know, kind of was a pretty smooth transition, surprisingly. And, you know, there’s still some things I got to learn out there, but things just over time, I’ll continue to obviously learn that just by playing games every day. But it’s, I mean, I felt good out there. So it’s been fun.”

At any rate, Soderstrom looks to continue being a key part of the Athletics, as through nine games, he has a .212 batting average with six RBIs.
