Astros teammates marvel at Cam Smith’s insane HR robbery
The Houston Astros extended their winning streak to two with a 5-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Thursday. In the process, outfielder Cam Smith put on a show.
In the bottom of the first, Rangers outfielder Brandon Nimmo smashed a ball to right field. Smith tracked it down and leapt at the wall, stretching out his glove and coming away with a home run robbery. Starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti and shortstop Jeremy Pena couldn’t believe what they saw, via Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
“I’m gonna be honest, like, I thought that was a flyout,” Arrighetti said. “It didn’t sound like he really got it, and it just kept going, kept going, kept going, and then Cam jumped, and I was like, ‘Oh, great, like I just gave up a homer.’ And then he came back down and didn’t really do much, but then he flipped the ball out of his glove and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s no way!’ He’s such an incredible outfielder.”
“That was amazing,” Peña added. “Cam Smith is a great athlete — second-best athlete on the team. I don’t have to say who’s the first [Peña smiled]. Great catch. He tried to act cool and no emotion like he does it all the time. I was like, ‘Bro, celebrate a little bit!’ Shout out to Cam.”

Alongside his web gem, Smith went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. He is now hitting .215 on the season with five home runs, 19 RBIs and seven stolen bases. While the Astros will want Smith to get his average up, he is proving to be a menace on the basepaths as he leads the team in stolen bases. Furthermore, his defense won’t be questioned in the outfield.
The Astros are dealing with plenty of injuries across their roster. They’ll be relying on players like Smith to help them get back into the hunt.
