Astros rumors: Is Yordan Alvarez trade actually on table? Jeff Passan weighs in
The Houston Astros have been a disappointment thus far on the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 28-35 ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. All of the struggles have led some to wonder if the Astros might be sellers as opposed to buyers at the MLB trade deadline, which is still about two months away.
One name that some fans have speculated on is longtime Astros designated hitter and left fielder Yordan Alvarez, who has had some huge moments in a Houston uniform over the years.
Recently, MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN weighed in on the speculation.
“Houston could launch an overnight retool were it willing to deal AL MVP favorite Yordan Alvarez, but opposing executives don’t see that happening. The lack of available power bats could make first baseman Christian Walker or third baseman Isaac Paredes a tempting acquisition, but hitters tend to have fewer in-season suitors, leaving marginal relievers (Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, Enyel De Los Santos) the likeliest Astros to move,” reported Passan.
Indeed, Alvarez has been enjoying an MVP-level campaign amid what has otherwise been a frustrating season for Houston, and dealing him could net the Astros a treasure trove of assets that would give them a kickstart in building for the future–but also force them to cut their losses and essentially end this era for the team, which has resulted in two World Series championships.
For now, it seems the Astrons are content to try to make smaller moves along the margins and hope that the team can slowly round back into form as the season continues.
The Astros will conclude their series against the Pirates on Thursday.
