Whether or not Anthony Davis will remain with the Washington Wizards long-term has been a major topic of discussion throughout the NBA offseason.

Multiple teams have tired to trade for Davis in recent months, notably the Golden State Warriors, who inquired about his availability in their pursuit of both AD and LeBron James, but Davis has also hinted at a possible departure by saying he wants to be with a winning organization.

Even so, the Wizards made it clear throughout the summer that they intended to keep Davis and had no interest in trading him.

With Davis on the court next to Trae Young and No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa, the Wizards believe they have a path to becoming a threat in the Eastern Conference. As he enters the final year of his contract before needing to decide on his $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season, Davis made his contract intentions with the Wizards clear at Media Day on Monday.

“[I'll decide] when the season is over,” Davis stated when questioned about when he would discuss contract matters with the Wizards. “We're going to go through the season and try to do what I do at a high level. And then when it's over, sit down and have those conversations again with front office.”

After being traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Wizards in February, Davis did not suit up for his new team during the 2025-26 season due to injury. Now entering his 15th year in the NBA and turning 34 in March, Davis is looking to cash in one last time on a new max-like contract extension.

Even so, Davis' comments on Monday confirm part of what was already known about a contract extension looking extremely unlikely before the start of the 2026-27 season. The Athletic reported in August that Davis and the Wizards would wait until sometime after the new season begins to begin talking about a new contract after becoming eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension this offseason.

Not only was this for the Wizards to understand how to utilize Davis and figure out how his skills match what is needed with their young core, but also for Davis to truly discover if Washington is where he wants to be.

“I am very excited for our season,” Davis commented. “I get to play basketball again. I haven't played since January [due to] the hand injury. So to be able to get back on the floor, it's going to be very exciting and very fun. Not even the games, but starting training camp. Starting the process with these guys. Obviously, it's a different look for the team than it's been the last few years.

“I am very excited about that.”

The Wizards went 17-65 last season and have not won more than 35 games in a season since the 2020-21 season, which was the last time this franchise made the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.
