With seven women confirmed for the WTA Finals at Indian Wells, there’s one remaining position that multiple players are battling to secure their place in the race for the top eight.

2026 Grand Slam holders Mirra Andreeva, Elena Rybakina and Linda Noskova guaranteed their entries in the finals due to the titles they hold. The American duo of Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have qualified after stellar performances this season, and Elina Svitolina also clinched a spot this week.

The remaining place is between three competitors who have had inconsistent performances this year: former world number one Iga Swiatek, Karolina Muchova and Marta Kostyuk.

Which of the three stars is best positioned to win the race to the final spot?

Karolina Muchova

Over the grass season, Muchova was undoubtedly one of the strongest players. She picked up a haul of points and titles, putting her in the best position to qualify.

However, over recent weeks, Muchova’s form has dropped dramatically, and she’s suffering from a few fitness issues, leading her to withdraw from the WTA 500 Ningbo event.

Muchova currently holds 4735 points, 600 more than Swiatek and 800 more than Kostyuk. With her competitors both playing in Ningbo meaning a haul of points could come their way if performances are at an elite level.

With only a couple more competitions before the final, it would not be a surprise to see the Czech number two play at either the 500 event in Tokyo or the 250 event in Guangzhou.

All depending on whether Swiatek or Kostyuk win the title in Ningbo.

Muchova finds herself in a luxurious position with a scenario which can see her qualify without playing.

If Swiatek doesn’t reach the quarter-finals and Kostyuk doesn’t reach the final, the final spot will belong to the Wimbledon finalist.

Swiatek and Kostyuk have a potential semi-final match-up in Ningbo, with at least one name guaranteed not to reach the final.

Iga Swiatek

This season has been a mental challenge for Swiatek; she’s shown signs of regression across the season with a few memorable early exits from competitions. Yet when she finds her mojo, she proves she still has what it takes to compete at the top.

Swiatek recently lost in the Wuhan semi-final to eventual champion and Roland-Garros finalist, Maja Chwalinska. Her fellow Polish star who’s reached a career-high ranking of 11th after the title.

Swiatek took a medical time-out in the semi-final, raising fitness concerns ahead of her match in Ningbo.

The Polish number one suffered a quad injury that affected her performance in the defeat to Chwalinska.

The current world number nine is in ninth place in the race with 4189 points. She is in desperate need of a title to put pressure on Muchova, but the quad issue could be the fate which ends her hopes of qualification.

Her early exits in Roland Garros and Wimbledon have hindered her ranking position, but her mental struggles have certainly been a factor. Something which was hugely visible in her shock defeat to Alex Eala at Wimbledon.

It’s beyond a shock that Swiatek has only won one title this season, which came in Canada. She must at least get to the quarter-finals of Ningbo, or her race is run.

Marta Kostyuk

This season has undoubtedly been Kostyuk’s career best, picking up titles and deep runs in competitions. The issue for the Ukrainian athlete is similar to Muchova’s. She was formidable on clay, but her form on other surfaces has been inconsistent.

Kostyuk has suffered two defeats in a row in Guadalajara to Liudmila Samsonova and in Wuhan to Maria Sakkari. Both exits were in her first matches of those tournaments.

The lack of form recently will certainly raise questions about whether she has any performances left this year to go on a run in Ningbo.

An early exit in the 500 event will mean she is certainly out of the running to get to the top eight. With a potential semi-final against Swiatek in the event, Kostyuk must be on her A-game to reach the final.

The world number 10 realistically needs to win the title to mount pressure on Muchova. If she can find her clay-season form, it is not beyond the realm of possibility to keep her fight going.

With Muchova in the best position, it’s up to Swiatek and Kostyuk to bring their title-winning performances to enter a decisive few weeks.
