Formula 1 returns to Austin for the 2026 United States Grand Prix on 25 October, with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli facing his first opportunity to secure the Drivers’ World Championship.

The Italian arrives at the Circuit of the Americas with 340 points, holding a commanding 102-point advantage over Mercedes team-mate George Russell. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton sits third on 229 points, while Max Verstappen has moved into fourth following consecutive victories for Red Bull.

Antonelli could become world champion on Sunday, although he needs victory and favourable results elsewhere. As confirmed by Formula 1’s championship calculations, several conditions must fall into place before the title can be decided in Texas.

The race therefore carries considerable importance for both the championship leader and his remaining challengers.

The 56-lap Grand Prix begins at 20:00 GMT on Sunday, with Verstappen looking to extend his winning streak at a circuit where he also claimed victory in 2025.

Antonelli has his first opportunity to win the championship

Antonelli’s second Formula 1 season has placed him on the verge of his maiden world title.

The Mercedes driver has won eight Grands Prix in 2026, including victories in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium, Italy and Spain. His consistency has also limited the damage during weekends when Mercedes have struggled for outright pace.

His third-place finish in Singapore strengthened his position further. Russell finished ninth after starting towards the back of the grid, allowing Antonelli to extend his championship lead to 102 points.

Six Grands Prix remain, with 150 points available to a driver who wins every remaining race. There are no further Sprint events scheduled this season.

For Antonelli to secure the championship in Austin, the following results are required:

  • Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix.
  • Russell must finish ninth or lower.
  • Hamilton must finish fifth or lower.

Verstappen cannot prevent Antonelli from securing the title if those conditions are met.

A victory would give Antonelli at least 365 points. With only five races remaining afterwards, his nearest challengers would be unable to overturn the resulting advantage.

However, Russell and Hamilton retain opportunities to delay the championship decision.

Russell has 238 points and remains Antonelli’s closest mathematical challenger. Hamilton sits nine points behind Russell, while Verstappen trails the Ferrari driver by another eight.

The wider scoring system is explained in World in Sport’s F1 points guide, including how finishing positions and championship tie-breaks influence the final standings.

For Antonelli, the strongest approach may be to concentrate on securing the best possible result rather than allowing the championship calculations to dictate his race.

Even if the title remains undecided after Austin, he will retain a substantial advantage heading into Mexico City.

Verstappen arrives in Austin after consecutive victories

Max Verstappen enters the United States Grand Prix as Formula 1’s most recent race winner.

The Red Bull driver secured victory at the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia before following that result with another win in Singapore.

His performance at Marina Bay was particularly convincing. Verstappen claimed pole position, won the Sprint and controlled Sunday’s Grand Prix to finish 7.335 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Antonelli completed the podium, while Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished fourth and fifth for McLaren.

The victory marked Verstappen’s first Grand Prix success at Marina Bay and his 73rd career Formula 1 win.

World in Sport examined Red Bull’s resurgence in its Singapore Grand Prix analysis, particularly the improved competitiveness of Verstappen’s car across different circuit conditions.

Austin now provides another examination of that progress.

Verstappen won the 2025 United States Grand Prix, demonstrating his ability to manage the demands of the circuit and maintain control over a full race distance.

Although he sits 119 points behind Antonelli, Verstappen remains mathematically involved in the championship. A fifth world title is unlikely given the size of that deficit, but his immediate form makes him a credible contender for victory in Texas.

Red Bull will want to establish whether their recent improvement can continue against Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren.

Mercedes face renewed pressure from Ferrari and Red Bull

Mercedes remain comfortably ahead in the Constructors’ Championship, but their advantage does not guarantee another victory in Austin.

The team lead the standings with 578 points, followed by Ferrari on 444.

McLaren occupy third with 339 points, while Red Bull sit just seven points behind on 332.

That narrow margin makes the fight between McLaren and Red Bull particularly important across the remaining rounds.

Ferrari have also demonstrated competitive race pace.

Leclerc finished second in Singapore, while Hamilton claimed sixth after battling for position during the closing stages.

Hamilton has already won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix this season, while Leclerc took victory at Silverstone. Both drivers therefore arrive in Austin with evidence that Ferrari can compete for wins under the right conditions.

McLaren’s recent results present a more complicated picture.

Norris won consecutive races in Hungary and the Netherlands, but the team have struggled to maintain that momentum during the latest rounds.

Formula 1 reported on 19 October that McLaren are planning additional upgrades for Austin, building on developments previously introduced in Azerbaijan.

Whether those changes improve performance will only become clear once the cars run on track.

Mercedes face a different challenge.

The team introduced an upgrade package in Malaysia but has not consistently extracted its full potential. Antonelli showed encouraging pace during parts of the Singapore weekend, although Russell encountered greater difficulties.

Unlike Singapore, Austin follows a conventional Grand Prix format, giving teams three practice sessions to evaluate their cars before qualifying.

That additional preparation time could prove particularly useful for Mercedes as they continue to understand their latest developments.

Why Circuit of the Americas could influence the result

Circuit of the Americas has hosted Formula 1 since 2012 and remains one of the championship’s most demanding modern venues.

The 5.513km circuit contains 20 corners and combines significant elevation changes with high-speed direction changes and several heavy braking zones.

Sunday’s race covers 56 laps, producing a total distance of 308.405km.

One of the most distinctive sections comes immediately after the start.

Drivers accelerate towards a steep uphill approach to Turn 1, where the wide entry encourages different racing lines. The braking zone has regularly provided overtaking opportunities, particularly on the opening lap.

The circuit then moves into a sequence of fast sweeping corners that test aerodynamic stability and driver confidence.

Further around the lap, a long straight leads into the heavy braking zone at Turn 12. This section offers another opportunity for drivers to challenge one another.

The combination of slow and fast corners creates difficult set-up compromises.

Teams need sufficient aerodynamic performance through the sweeping sections without sacrificing too much straight-line speed. Meanwhile, braking stability and traction remain essential through the slower corners.

Tyre management could also influence the race.

The circuit places substantial demands on tyres through its direction changes and longer corners. Drivers who push too aggressively early in a stint may struggle to maintain their pace later.

However, actual tyre behaviour will depend on the compounds selected, track temperatures and conditions during the weekend.

Charles Leclerc holds the official race lap record at Circuit of the Americas with a time of 1:36.169, set in 2019.

United States Grand Prix 2026 schedule and UK start times

The United States Grand Prix takes place from Friday 23 October to Sunday 25 October.

Austin does not host a Sprint race in 2026. Teams will therefore complete three practice sessions before Saturday’s qualifying session and Sunday’s Grand Prix.

All UK session start times are as follows.

Friday 23 October

First practice begins at 18:30 BST, followed by second practice at 22:00 BST.

Saturday 24 October

Third practice begins at 18:30 BST, with qualifying scheduled for 22:00 BST.

Sunday 25 October

The United States Grand Prix starts at 20:00 GMT, equivalent to 15:00 local time in Austin.

UK viewers should be aware that British Summer Time ends on Sunday morning. As a result, Friday and Saturday’s sessions take place during BST, while Sunday’s Grand Prix starts after the clocks have returned to GMT.

The official United States Grand Prix timetable confirms the local session schedule, which remains subject to change.

Sky Sports F1 will broadcast the weekend’s action live in the United Kingdom.

Qualifying could shape the championship picture

Qualifying will be particularly important for drivers hoping to challenge Antonelli and Verstappen.

Although Austin offers several overtaking opportunities, starting towards the front can reduce exposure to first-lap incidents and provide greater strategic flexibility.

Mercedes will want both drivers competing near the front, particularly as Russell attempts to keep his championship hopes alive.

For Russell, a strong qualifying performance could provide the foundation for a result that delays Antonelli’s title celebrations.

Hamilton faces a similar situation.

The Ferrari driver needs to remain close enough to the front to challenge for a podium. His result could also determine whether Antonelli becomes champion on Sunday.

Verstappen, meanwhile, will hope to convert his recent form into another competitive qualifying performance.

His Singapore victory followed an excellent qualifying session, allowing him to control the race from the front.

Austin’s demanding layout could produce smaller differences between the leading teams. Nevertheless, practice results will provide the first meaningful indication of their relative performance this weekend.

McLaren and Red Bull fight for third in the Constructors’ Championship

While Mercedes and Ferrari occupy the leading two positions in the Constructors’ standings, the battle immediately behind them remains much closer.

McLaren hold a seven-point advantage over Red Bull.

Norris has provided McLaren with their two Grand Prix victories this season, but both drivers will need stronger results if the team are to defend their position.

Verstappen has supplied Red Bull with considerable momentum following his victories in Malaysia and Singapore.

Isack Hadjar’s contribution will also be important. Red Bull cannot rely solely on Verstappen if McLaren consistently bring both cars home in the points.

The competition for third therefore provides another significant storyline beyond Antonelli’s championship opportunity.

For McLaren, improved performance in Austin would strengthen their position before the final five rounds.

Red Bull, however, arrives with recent evidence that they can challenge for race victories.

What to expect from the 2026 United States Grand Prix

Verstappen’s recent results make him one of the leading contenders for victory, while Antonelli’s championship position gives Mercedes a different set of priorities.

The Italian does not need to win in Austin to remain firmly in control of the title race.

Nevertheless, victory would offer him the opportunity to become world champion with five Grands Prix still remaining.

Ferrari could influence that outcome, particularly if Leclerc and Hamilton reproduce their competitive Singapore performance.

McLaren also has an opportunity to respond after a challenging sequence of races, although the effectiveness of their planned upgrades remains uncertain.

The opening practice sessions should establish whether Red Bull’s resurgence continues on another circuit with different performance demands.

Qualifying will then reveal which teams have found the strongest balance between straight-line speed, cornering performance and braking stability.

For Antonelli, Sunday’s race could mark the defining moment of his young Formula 1 career. For Russell, Hamilton and Verstappen, Austin represents another opportunity to influence when the championship is decided.

The next round follows immediately in Mexico City on 1 November, leaving little time for teams to respond before the season enters its final stretch.
