The New York Rangers picked up a big win over the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. New York defeated Detroit 2-0, behind a strong performance from rookie goaltender Dylan Garand. Garand posted his first shutout in the NHL.

Following the game, Garand opened up about what it meant to him to accomplish that feat.

“This has been the craziest week of my life,” he said, per NHL.com. “I got cut Sunday and put on waivers, I cleared Monday and went to Hartford and found an apartment, had two practices there, then got called back up and I’m playing on Friday.”

Despite his wild journey, Garand showed no signs of rust. New York's young goaltender was putting up a performance for the ages Friday.

“Garand’s 22 saves were the most by a Rangers rookie in a shutout since (Igor) Shesterkin made 27 in a 3-0 win against the New Jersey Devils on April 13, 2021,” NHL.com reported.

The Rangers goalie actually started three games for the team during the 2025-26 season. Garand picked up two victories, and 91 total saves.

Garand didn't earn a roster spot on New York's roster to start the year. He was beat out by Shesterkin and Joonas Korpisalo. Korpisalo went down with an injury, which gave Garand an opportunity.

“This week speaks volumes about his character,” Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said. “Pro sports are competitive and things don’t always go your way. You have to work through the ebbs and flows, and I really have great admiration for how Dylan handled this whole situation.”

The Rangers improved to 2-1 on the season following the victory. New York has now won back-to-back games. The club is next in action against the Utah Mammoth on Sunday.
