UCLA is 5-0 on the season, and coming off upsetting Oregon last Saturday. Before the game, UCLA head coach Bob Chesney gave a fiery speech to his team, and it seemed to work, as UCLA won 17-15.
With UCLA climbing the rankings, there are some hopes of the team making the College Football Playoff. Now, Chesney is talking about building the team into a championship contender, per Nick Kosko of On3.
“Goals are for people that want to win once,” Chesney said. “Process and standards are for people that want to win longterm.”
Regardless of the outcome of this season, Chesney has already done amazing work at UCLA. Under DeShaun Foster, UCLA won just eight games in two seasons. They last made a bowl game in 2023, when Chip Kelly led them to an 8-5 record. That was also the last time UCLA was ranked, when they climbed as high as 18th in Week 7. The last time UCLA was 5-0 was in 2022, and they would get to 6-0 before their first loss.

They had not had a winning season for nine straight years until Chesney led them to three straight winning seasons before moving on. He then led Division II Assumption to three straight playoff berths. He would do the same at Holy Cross, bringing them to the playoffs four times, including the team being ranked sixth in 2022. Finally, at James Madison, he went 21-6 and brought the team to the playoffs in 2025.
UCLA will look to move to 6-0 on Saturday when they face Wisconsin at home.
