The Philadelphia Phillies have hired former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as their third-base and infield coach for the 2027 season. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced the appointment Thursday, following the team's decision to retain Don Mattingly as its full-time manager on Wednesday.

Mendoza returns to the National League East after spending two-and-a-half seasons managing the Mets. He was dismissed in June 2026 following a disappointing 34-47 start, with New York's 12-game losing streak in April contributing to a campaign that quickly unraveled.

The 46-year-old finished his managerial tenure with a 206-199 record. His biggest achievement came in 2024, when the Mets reached the National League Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. However, New York's collapse during the latter portion of the 2025 campaign, followed by their poor start in 2026, ultimately cost him his position.

Andy Green replaced Mendoza during the season and initially served as the interim manager. The Mets subsequently removed the interim designation and signed Green to a three-year extension after he guided the team to a 40-41 record under his leadership. Mendoza's appointment in Philadelphia means he will continue working within the same division as his former team, which faces the Phillies 13 times each season.

Before taking charge of the Mets, Mendoza spent six seasons on the New York Yankees' coaching staff from 2018 through 2023 under manager Aaron Boone.

Philadelphia's interim arrangement with Mattingly has given way to a two-year commitment, keeping him with the Phillies. He replaced Rob Thomson on April 28, following Philadelphia's 9-19 start. The Phillies recovered under Mattingly, compiling a 79-55 record and securing a postseason berth despite their difficult beginning.

Mendoza's hiring also comes after Philadelphia experienced defensive problems across its infield. Shortstop Trea Turner was among the players whose performance raised concerns, finishing the 2026 season with minus-eight outs above average after ranking among MLB's best defensive shortstops in 2025. He batted .242 with a .297 on-base percentage and a .378 slugging percentage in 157 games, setting a career low offensively.

Dombrowski has indicated that Turner is expected to begin 2027 at shortstop, although his ability to remain there will depend on his performance throughout the season.

Anthony Contreras, who assumed the third-base coaching role during the 2026 season, is expected to remain with the Phillies in a different capacity.
