The Minnesota Twins have parted ways with longtime scout and former scouting director Deron Johnson, ending his 32-year run with the organization as the club continues reshaping its baseball operations.

Johnson joined Minnesota in January 1994 as a Northern California area scout and later rose to scouting director, overseeing nine amateur drafts before moving into a senior advisory role in 2016. The Twins eliminated that senior-advisor position Monday, bringing one of the longest continuous tenures in the organization's baseball operations department to an end.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale took to X, formerly Twitter, highlighting the move and Johnson's lengthy run with the franchise Monday as Minnesota opened up its final road series of the season.

“The Minnesota Twins let go beloved and shrewd scout Deron Johnson, who has been with the organization since 1994.”

Johnson became the Twins' West Coast supervisor in October 1998 before taking over as director of scouting in September 2007. His first draft in that role produced outfielder Aaron Hicks with the No. 14 overall pick in 2008.

Minnesota later selected Byron Buxton second overall in 2012 while Johnson led the amateur scouting department. Other first-round selections during his tenure included Kohl Stewart, Nick Gordon and Tyler Jay.

The Twins promoted Johnson to senior advisor of scouting in December 2016. In that role, he continued evaluating amateur talent while also handling professional, international and minor-league scouting assignments.

Monday's move came during the final week of a disappointing season for Minnesota. The already-eliminated Twins opened their last road series of the year against the San Francisco Giants on the same day and selected the contract of 2020 first-round pick Aaron Sabato for his major-league debut.

The club has not released a detailed public explanation for Johnson's departure beyond eliminating his position, and Johnson has not publicly addressed the decision.

His exit closes a remarkable 32-year chapter with the Twins, spanning nearly every level of the scouting department from area scout to West Coast supervisor, scouting director and senior advisor.
