Despite missing top defenseman Jake Sanderson to injury and adjusting to life after the offseason trade of Brady Tkachuk, the Ottawa Senators are off to a great start in 2026-27, sitting at 6-3-0 and in third place in the Atlantic Division.
That start follows back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the organization rewarded head coach Travis Green with a multiyear contract extension through the 2030-31 season, general manager Steve Staios announced Monday.
“When I was in the search to identify our head coach two years ago, it was clear to me that Travis had the qualities to move our team forward. I have watched him implement systems and structures that have reinforced my belief in his coaching abilities,” Staios stated in the official release.
“We share the same vision and philosophy and are confident we can continue to build on our team.”
Assistants Nolan Baumgartner, Ben Sexton and Mike Yeo, along with goaltending coach Justin Peters, also received multiyear extensions.
Green was hired as Ottawa's 14th head coach in franchise history in May 2024 and has led the Senators to the postseason in each of his first two campaigns.
The 55-year-old was previously on a four-year deal that ran through 2027-28. His new agreement extends the organization's commitment as the Senators look to build on their recent progress.
Along with making the playoffs in both seasons behind the bench, Green has guided Ottawa to consecutive campaigns of at least 90 points.
He played 970 NHL games over a 14-year career with the New York Islanders, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins before turning to coaching.

He took over the Vancouver Canucks in 2017 after spending a few years with their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, helping the franchise advance to the second round of the 2020 postseason. After being fired in December 2021, he later joined the New Jersey Devils and replaced Lindy Ruff as interim head coach during the 2023-24 campaign.
Green has found a home in Ottawa, and the way things are going, the Senators look poised to challenge for another Stanley Cup Playoff berth next spring.
He and his staff now have contract stability as they continue their quest to deliver the modern Senators their first Stanley Cup championship.
