The New York Giants recently fell to 3-2-1 with a tough home loss to the New Orleans Saints. JJ McCarthy made his Giants debut in this one after his recent trade from the Minnesota Vikings, taking over for a struggling Jameis Winston and nearly leading a miraculous comeback for the team.
It was an impressive performance for McCarthy, and now, NFL insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has spoken on what the future might hold for the former first-round draft pick.
“We will see what the Giants end up deciding, if Jameis Winston maybe gets one more week on a short leash or whether it's JJ McCarthy just handed the keys. One thing we know for sure: McCarthy's time is coming, whether it's this week, whether it's next week. He is going to play, and the early returns that the Giants saw are very, very promising,” said Rapoport, per a video posted to his account on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, the Giants had plenty of reason to be enthusiastic about what they saw out of McCarthy on Sunday, as the backup entered the game in a tough situation, overcame an early interception, and then proceeded to dice up the Saints' defense, giving New York a shot to tie things up late, although they came up just short.
Article Continues BelowRapoport also noted that the Giants might be hesitant to put McCarthy back out there next week against the Houston Texans' defensive front, but clearly, he has confidence that the recent trade acquisition will get his shot sooner rather than later.
New York's game against Houston is set for next Sunday on the road at 1:00 pm ET.
