Jason Robertson's future with the Dallas Stars became one of the NHL offseason's biggest talking points after player and club could not agree to a long-term contract extension.

The 27-year-old reportedly turned down a lucrative eight-year offer from the Seattle Kraken in a potential sign-and-trade before returning to Dallas on a one-year, $12 million contract to avoid salary arbitration.

Robertson could reach unrestricted free agency next summer if Stars general manager Jim Nill can't get him re-signed — and the former GM of the Year provided a key update on contract talks over the weekend.

“I’m going to wait until probably around the first of December,” Nill said ahead of Dallas' 4-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night, per NHL.com's Tracey Myers.

“I don’t want any distraction. Just get off to a good start and I’ll sit down with his representatives around the first of December, see if we can get something done.”

A long-term agreement remains unresolved following an eventful offseason. Robertson's rejection of Seattle's reported offer of approximately $15 million annually derailed a proposed sign-and-trade, leaving him in Texas for at least another season.

The Arcadia, California native can sign a long-term extension beginning Jan. 1, 2027.

“I mean, at the start of the season all I can think about is getting the season going, getting a rhythm,” Robertson told reporters Saturday. “I think after 20 games is when you start to understand. The first 10 games, OK, you get into it and after the first 20 you can start to reevaluate the season and everything.

“We’re still in that area with all the guys, (and) personally for me too. Every guy can evaluate their season through a quarter of the year so, all we’re focused on is the first 20 games and reevaluate then.”

It's been a productive start to the 2026-27 season for Robertson, who has managed three goals and seven points in eight games for the 4-3-1 Stars.

It's not quite as prolific as his pace from last year, when he amassed 45 goals and 96 points in 82 regular-season games. That still fell short of his career-high 109 points in 2022-23.

It's early, but increasing that production over the next couple of months could strengthen his agent's position when contract talks begin.

It'll be interesting to see whether the star forward ends up re-signing with the only franchise he's ever known after being selected 39th overall by the Stars in the 2017 NHL Draft.
